Famous Nigerian singer, Peter Okoye, known professionally as Mr P, has openly stated that his greatest personal fear is not death, but the prospect of being poor.

Dependable NG reports that Mr P shared this revelation while appearing as a guest on a recent episode of The Nancy Isime Show. The singer drew a clear line, stating he is not afraid of death but has a profound fear of being broke.

The artist recounted a deeply traumatic childhood experience that cemented this fear: his family’s rented single-room apartment was suddenly demolished after the landlord sold the property. He stressed that he never wishes to return to that state of financial distress.

“I am not afraid of death. The only thing I am afraid of in this life is poverty, of being broke. I have tasted it [poverty] before,” Mr P stated.

He provided vivid details of the difficult living conditions before the demolition: “I have been in our house with my parents and siblings and a bulldozer came and demolished it. We were living in a boys’ quarter, me, my mum, my dad, all of us. The whole family, six boys and two girls living in a one-bedroom apartment. They had to divide the room with a curtain.”

The trauma was intensified by the manner of the eviction: “So, the landlord had sold the compound, we were trying to plead to get some time to plan our relocation and then a bulldozer came and started demolishing the house while we were still in the building.”
