Osun Police Command Reinforces Total Ban on Fireworks for Christmas Celebrations

The Osun State Police Command has issued a strong reminder that the ban on all types of fireworks remains strictly in force as the Christmas and New Year celebrations approach. The police command specifically warned residents against the use of knockouts, bangers, and other explosive pyrotechnics.

Dependable NG reports that the warning was communicated in a public service statement released on Wednesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, acting on the directive of the Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Gotan.

The statement noted that the loud sounds produced by such explosives pose serious security implications, as they are often mistaken for gunshots or improvised explosive devices (IEDs). This creates unnecessary panic, tension, and avoidable security alerts, particularly at a time of heightened national security concerns. The command stressed that the use of these devices is strictly prohibited in residential areas, near hospitals, places of worship, markets, motor parks, and along major roads.

CP Gotan used the announcement to urge parents and guardians to restrain their children and wards from using fireworks, highlighting that such actions could trigger widespread alarm among the public. The Commissioner of Police has directed all Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and Tactical Unit heads to intensify patrols across the state to ensure compliance with the ban.

Officers have been instructed to deal firmly but professionally with anyone found detonating knockouts or otherwise causing public disturbance or apprehension. The command warned that individuals whose actions lead to public disorder, injury, or property damage as a result of using fireworks would face arrest and prosecution in accordance with the law. The command assured all residents of adequate security coverage throughout the Yuletide and beyond, urging the public to report any suspicious activities capable of breaching the peace to the police via two dedicated phone lines: 08039537995 and 08123823981.
