Okoronkwo, Ogbodo Triumph at Enyimba 2025
The Aba Sports Club was electrified as the curtain fell on the historic “Enyimba 2025” Abia State Boxing Championship, an event that cemented the state’s burgeoning reputation as a hub for combat sports. In a night defined by raw power and tactical finesse, Zoe Chibuike Okoronkwo successfully defended his Featherweight title, delivering a commanding performance that ended in a technical knockout victory over his challenger, Nwambeke Ndubuisi. The atmosphere reached a fever pitch as the referee waved off the contest, signaling Okoronkwo’s continued dominance in the division.
The championship, which marked the first professional boxing event of its kind in Abia State, also saw Israel Obinna Ogbodo secure a hard-fought victory against Udeh Chibuike in a display of remarkable stamina. Meanwhile, the lightweight category witnessed a masterclass in defensive boxing as Chinaza Ikechukwu Okoronkwo retained his title. He fended off a spirited challenge from Ede Emmanuel Peter, eventually earning the nod from the judges in a unanimous decision that reflected his superior ring generalship throughout the bout.
Abia State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Nwaobilor Ananaba, hailed the tournament as a direct result of Governor Alex Otti’s intentional sports development policy. Speaking at the venue, Ananaba emphasized that the administration is committed to uncovering raw talent in the grassroots and providing the necessary platforms for young athletes to transition into the professional ranks. According to him, the feather and lightweight championships are just the beginning of a broader strategy to revitalize diverse sporting disciplines across the state.
The significance of the event was further underscored by the presence of Dr. Rafiu Ladipo, President of the Nigeria Boxing Board of Control (NBB of C). Ladipo commended the Abia State government for its investment in the “sweet science,” noting that sports remains the most potent unifying factor in Nigeria. He urged other states to follow Abia’s lead by allocating more resources to boxing, which he believes has the potential to produce future world champions if given the right attention.
Adding a touch of legacy to the proceedings, the event featured the formal handover of a professional boxing ring, procured on behalf of the state government by an illustrious son and former boxer, Mr. Ikechukwu Okoronkwo. Abia State Director of Sports, Obioma George, noted that such partnerships between the government and veteran athletes are crucial for sustainable growth. As the fighters hung up their gloves for the night, the consensus among spectators and officials alike was that “Enyimba 2025” has successfully set a new gold standard for regional boxing in Nigeria.
