The post-holiday travel season has been marred by tragedy in Bauchi State, where nine passengers lost their lives in a horrific road traffic accident along the Kano-Maiduguri Expressway. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Friday morning, left another ten commuters battling for their lives with various degrees of injuries. The Bauchi State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed the development, describing the scene as a devastating consequence of avoidable driving errors.

According to Sector Commander CC Apaji Danladi Boyi, the crash took place at approximately 6:20 a.m. on the Jama’are-Azare axis of the highway. A commercial vehicle, identified by its registration number KTG 181 ZZ, was transporting nineteen passengers from Gombe State to Kano when the driver lost control. The force of the impact claimed nine lives on the spot, turning what was intended to be a routine journey into a site of mourning.

Preliminary investigations conducted by the FRSC point toward a lethal combination of excessive speed and driver fatigue. Officials noted that the driver likely succumbed to exhaustion, a common hazard during the heavy traffic volume of the New Year return rush. This exhaustion, coupled with a violation of speed limits, resulted in the vehicle spinning out of control and flipping, leaving the occupants trapped within the wreckage.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene shortly after the distress call was received, working tirelessly to extricate the survivors. The ten injured passengers were rushed to the Federal Medical Centre in Azare for emergency stabilization and treatment. Meanwhile, the remains of the deceased were transported to the hospital’s mortuary, where they currently await formal identification by grieving relatives who have begun to converge on the facility.

In the wake of the tragedy, Commander Boyi has ordered an intensification of “Operation Zero,” a special patrol initiative designed to curb road carnage across Bauchi State. He noted that traffic remains exceptionally high as thousands of Nigerians travel back to their bases following the Yuletide and New Year festivities. The Corps has deployed more officers to major junctions and known accident blackspots to enforce strict adherence to safety protocols and speed limits.

The FRSC has issued a stern warning to commercial drivers, urging them to prioritize rest and avoid the temptation of making multiple high-speed trips to capitalize on the increased passenger demand. Authorities stressed that no amount of profit is worth the lives being lost on the nation’s highways. They also called on passengers to speak up when they notice a driver is speeding or showing visible signs of sleepiness, as such interventions can often prevent disaster.

As the investigation into the exact mechanics of the crash continues, the tragedy serves as a somber reminder of the dangers lurking on Nigerian roads during peak travel periods. For the families of the nine victims, the start of 2026 has been marked by an irreparable loss, underscoring the urgent need for a shift in driving culture across the country.
