Marjorie Taylor Greene Resigns After High-Profile Spat with Trump
Controversial Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene has announced her resignation from the U.S. House of Representatives, a decision that appears to be the climax of an escalating and increasingly bitter clash with former President Donald Trump and the Republican establishment.
Greene’s decision was communicated in a statement late Friday night. While the political row provided the context, the Congresswoman cited her profound disappointment with her party’s performance during the nation’s longest government shutdown. She stated she was fundamentally opposed to the Republican leadership’s refusal to pass legislation aimed at salvaging American healthcare and protecting citizens from “outrageous overpriced and unaffordable health insurance policies.”
The Congresswoman decried what she viewed as the persistent dysfunction in Washington, criticizing how America was “forced fed disgusting political drama once again from both sides of the aisle,” arguing that the House should have remained in session to fix the “disaster” facing the country. She specifically attacked Speaker Mike Johnson for closing the House during the shutdown, accusing him of systematically sidelining bills sponsored by most members, noting that “The Speaker never brings them to the floor for a vote.”
Greene highlighted her own legislative achievements, including her efforts that led to the impeachment of President Biden’s Secretary of Homeland Security over the “dangerous open border invasion into America,” and successfully advocating for the defunding of “the corrupt USAID” during her tenure as DOGE Subcommittee Chair.
The core of her rupture with the former President centered on her critique of the Republican establishment and a dramatic vote. Greene, who claimed she “fought harder than most GOP members to elect Trump,” stressed that most of the “Establishment Republicans, who secretly hate him and who stabbed him in the back, have all been welcomed” back into the fold. In recent weeks, she had repeatedly criticized the Trump administration for prioritizing foreign policy over pressing domestic issues and was outspoken in demanding the release of the Epstein files.
The breaking point appears to have been her alignment with three other House Republicans in joining Democrats to force a vote on a bill demanding the release of documents related to Jeffrey Epstein. This action directly infuriated Trump and his most loyal supporters. The former President responded fiercely, publicly branding Greene a “traitor,” a “ranting lunatic,” and a “disgrace” to the Republican Party. He also mocked her name, posting the statement “Green grass turns Brown when it begins to rot.”
Reacting to the abrupt resignation, Georgia GOP Chairman Josh McKoon issued a statement calling Greene a “tireless fighter” for America First principles, conservative values, and accountability. McKoon noted on X that while her decision to step down came as a surprise, her legacy as a “bold voice for the grassroots” would endure. He assured the public that the party would ensure a “conservative warrior” fills the seat through the upcoming special election, emphasizing the commitment to strong representation for the people of Georgia’s 14th District.
