The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has expressed profound outrage and grief over the brutal murder of a Nigerian national, Mr. Emeka Christian, in Pune, India. According to a statement released on Saturday, January 17, 2026, Christian was allegedly beaten to death during a violent confrontation with two other Nigerians, identified as 31-year-old Chukwudi Okafor and Samuel Eze. The tragedy, which has sent shockwaves through the Nigerian community abroad, reportedly stemmed from a heated dispute involving a romance scam and personal betrayal.

Abdur-Rahman Balogun, NiDCOM’s Director of Media and Public Relations, described the incident as a senseless loss of life that has left a family in deep heartbreak. While preliminary reports suggest the altercation was fueled by a romantic rivalry linked to fraudulent online activities, the commission has focused its immediate response on the necessity of accountability. NiDCOM has formally petitioned the Indian authorities to launch a transparent and rigorous investigation to ensure that the perpetrators face the full weight of the law.

In a poignant reaction to the killing, NiDCOM Chairman Abike Dabiri-Erewa reminded Nigerians in the diaspora that their conduct serves as a direct reflection of the nation’s image. She lamented that a conflict between “brothers” could escalate to such a lethal degree, especially in a foreign land where unity is often the only safety net for migrants. Dabiri-Erewa emphasized that violence is never a legitimate tool for conflict resolution and urged the diaspora community to prioritize dialogue and lawfulness.

The commission’s appeal highlights a growing concern over internal conflicts among Nigerians living abroad, which often complicate the work of diplomatic missions. By calling for “justice without delay,” NiDCOM hopes to send a clear message that the Nigerian government will not overlook crimes committed against its citizens, even when the accused are of the same nationality. The statement concluded with a plea for all Nigerians abroad to act as their brothers’ keepers and to uphold the dignity of their home country in every situation.

As the Indian police proceed with their inquiry in Pune, the bereaved family awaits the repatriation of Christian’s remains and the commencement of legal proceedings. This tragic case serves as a somber reminder of the high stakes and devastating consequences that can arise from internal communal disputes when they are allowed to fester into physical violence.
