ECOWAS Condemns Benin Coup Attempt, Threatens Regional Force Deployment
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission has expressed deep concern and “consternation” over reports of an attempted military takeover in the Republic of Benin, describing the development as a grave and unacceptable assault on the democratic will of the people.
Dependable NG reports that in a strong statement issued in Abuja on Sunday, ECOWAS “strongly condemns this unconstitutional move that represents a subversion of the will of the people of Benin.” The regional bloc called for the full respect of the country’s Constitution and democratic order.
The Commission commended the swift and decisive efforts of the legitimate government and the Republican Army in bringing the situation under control, following an early morning announcement by a group of soldiers calling themselves the “Military Committee for Refoundation” who claimed to have removed President Patrice Talon from office. The coup attempt was later announced as foiled by Benin’s Interior Minister.
ECOWAS issued a stern warning, affirming that the leaders of the plot, both individually and collectively, would be held responsible for any loss of life or property resulting from their actions.
Furthermore, the Commission affirmed its full support for the government and people of Benin, pledging to defend the Constitution and territorial integrity of the country “in all forms necessary,” which includes the potential deployment of the regional standby force.
