NFF Clears Wrexham Star Arthur Okonkwo for Super Eagles Debut

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has officially confirmed that Arthur Okonkwo is now eligible to represent the Super Eagles, following a successful nationality switch from England to Nigeria. The 24-year-old goalkeeper, who currently stars for Wrexham AFC in the English Championship, received the final green light from FIFA this week, ending months of administrative anticipation. Born in London to Nigerian parents, Okonkwo has spent his developmental years representing England across the U-15 to U-18 levels, but he has now formally committed his international future to the land of his heritage.

NFF Director of Communications, Ademola Olajire, expressed the federation’s enthusiasm regarding the development, noting that Okonkwo’s arrival adds significant quality to a critical department. “The NFF is always excited to have another good player committing to Nigeria and providing an option in a particular position,” Olajire told ESPN. Standing at an imposing 6’6″, the former Arsenal academy graduate brings a modern, commanding presence that the NFF believes will foster healthy competition within the squad as they navigate the post-AFCON 2025 landscape.

Okonkwo’s professional journey has seen him transition from a promising Hale End prospect to a cornerstone of the “Welcome to Wrexham” success story. After instrumental loan spells with Crewe Alexandra and Sturm Graz, he joined Wrexham permanently in July 2024, playing a pivotal role in their ascent through the English football pyramid. His current form in the Championship has been particularly impressive, recording seven clean sheets so far in the 2025/2026 season, a statistic that has clearly caught the eye of the Nigerian technical crew.

The timing of the clearance means Okonkwo is now set to challenge for the Super Eagles’ number one shirt, a position currently held by Stanley Nwabali following his heroics in recent tournaments. He joins a competitive roster of shot-stoppers that includes Maduka Okoye, Francis Uzoho, Amas Obasogie, and the emerging Ebenezer Harcourt. While Okonkwo was overlooked for the ongoing AFCON 2025 roster in Morocco due to the pending status of his switch, he is now expected to be a mainstay in the squad for the upcoming 2027 AFCON qualifiers and the remainder of the 2026 World Cup qualification series.

For the Super Eagles, the inclusion of a goalkeeper with Okonkwo’s pedigree—seasoned in the high-pressure environment of English league football—is seen as a strategic win. Analysts suggest his ball-playing ability and aerial dominance provide a different tactical dimension for coach Eric Chelle. As the NFF continues its trend of successfully recruiting high-level dual-national talents, Okonkwo’s commitment reinforces the growing allure of the Nigerian national team for elite players across the diaspora.
