The Social Democratic Party (SDP) chairmanship candidate for the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Obinna Simon, widely known as MC Tagwaye, has pledged to dismantle the controversial system of double taxation currently burdening businesses and residents within the capital city. This commitment was highlighted by the Igbo Community Association, which has closely reviewed the candidate’s blueprint ahead of the high-stakes 2026 local government elections.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Monday, the President-General of the association, Ikenna Ellis-Ezenekwe, revealed that Simon’s campaign is built on a “human-faced” administrative model. The leadership of the Igbo community indicated that they have meticulously studied the SDP candidate’s manifesto, finding his proposed economic and urban policies to be particularly resonant with the daily struggles of those living and working in the Federal Capital Territory.

A primary pillar of Simon’s platform is the elimination of overlapping tax demands from multiple authorities, a perennial headache for small business owners in AMAC. By streamlining revenue collection, the candidate aims to create a more business-friendly environment that encourages local investment without the fear of predatory levies. Beyond fiscal reforms, Simon has also vowed to curb what he describes as “needless demolitions” in the area council. Ellis-Ezenekwe noted that while urban planning is necessary, the SDP candidate has promised that any future enforcement will be handled strictly within legal frameworks and with adequate consideration for the welfare of common residents.

“Needless demolition will be curbed legally with a human face. These two issues—taxation and demolition—affect the common residents in the FCT more than almost anything else,” Ellis-Ezenekwe stated. He emphasized that the community’s interest in Simon’s candidacy transcends ethnic lines, focusing instead on the practical quality-of-life improvements his tenure could bring to all FCT residents.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has already scheduled the FCT Area Council elections for February 21, 2026. As the political temperature begins to rise in Abuja, Simon—a popular comedian and activist—is positioning himself as a grassroots alternative to the status quo. The Igbo Community Association concluded the briefing by calling on the diverse residents of AMAC to rally behind Simon’s bid to reform the council’s management and protect the livelihoods of its citizens from exploitative policies.
