Osun JUSUN Halts Strike for Promotion Exercise

The Osun State chapter of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) has announced a temporary suspension of its prolonged industrial action, effective from Tuesday, December 16, 2025. The decision comes as a direct result of tangible progress made in ongoing negotiations between the union and the management of the state judiciary, coupled with a pressing need to allow members to participate in crucial administrative activities.

The temporary suspension was officially confirmed by the Osun JUSUN Chairman, Comrade Idris Adedayo Adeniran, in a statement released on Monday, December 15, 2025. He disclosed that the move was fully approved by the National Secretariat of JUSUN, led by National President Comrade Marwan Mustapha Adamu, following extensive consultations regarding the recent developments in talks with relevant state authorities. Furthermore, the decision received unanimous endorsement from local members during a congress held at the High Court premises in Osogbo.

The strike, which commenced on September 19, 2025, will be paused to facilitate two critical processes. The union explained that the primary reason for the suspension is to enable affected workers to appear before the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) for the long-awaited 2024 promotion exercise. The suspension will also allow the management across the three arms of the Osun State Judiciary to prepare and submit the necessary documentation for officers who are due for promotion in the 2025 exercise.

According to the statement, eligible officers for the 2025 promotion exercise have already been scheduled to appear before the JSC on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, in line with the Commission’s predetermined schedule. This window of opportunity for promotions was a key factor in the union’s decision to temporarily halt the strike.

Comrade Adeniran stressed that the halt in industrial action is strictly temporary and is intended to create a conducive atmosphere for the judiciary management to address outstanding issues and, crucially, to clear the mounting backlog of judicial work across the state’s courts. “This suspension will be temporary to enable the management to organise and clear the backlog of work in all the courts in Osun State Judiciary,” he confirmed.

JUSUN also acknowledged that some of its demands have already seen progress, citing the rectification of the 2024 junior staff promotion exercise by the Judicial Service Commission as a notable breakthrough. The union urged the judiciary management to collaborate closely with the heads of the High Courts, Magistrates’ Courts, District Customary Courts, and Customary Courts to ensure a smooth and efficient resumption of duties, particularly following the upcoming Christmas break. While courts prepare to reopen, JUSUN assured both its members and the public that active engagement with relevant stakeholders to resolve all remaining grievances is still very much underway.
