Super Eagles goalkeeper Francis Uzoho has addressed the perceived rivalry and confirmed a supportive, fraternal relationship with his national teammate, Stanley Nwabali. Uzoho, the shot-stopper for Omonoia FC in Cyprus, disclosed that the depth of their bond is often misunderstood or simply unseen by those outside the Nigerian national team camp.

Uzoho, who recently received a recall to the Super Eagles squad ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, used a media engagement with the team to set the record straight on his association with the Chippa United goalkeeper. Despite the inevitable public scrutiny and competition for the number one jersey, Uzoho insisted that the atmosphere between them is one of mutual respect and aid.

“Stanley is my brother, you know, when he came, we were all together,” Uzoho stated, emphasizing the immediate connection and unity among the goalkeepers. He stressed that their interactions are characterized by support rather than antagonism. “We helped each other. I helped him. He helped me. So Stanley is a good guy, which I have a very close relationship with him.”

His comments directly addressed the public speculation that often surrounds goalkeepers in a national team, where selection decisions are fiercely debated. Uzoho acknowledged this external perception, but stressed that the reality within the camp is different. “Maybe the people outside there don’t see it, but personally with him, I’m good with him. And also with Amas [Obasogie],” he added, confirming that the camaraderie extends beyond just Nwabali to include the entire goalkeeping unit. This statement serves to reassure supporters that the competition for places is healthy and not detrimental to team cohesion, which is crucial as the Super Eagles prepare for a major tournament.

Nigeria’s national team, currently under the guidance of coach Eric Chelle, is drawn into Group C for the 2025 AFCON, where they are set to compete against Tunisia, Tanzania, and Uganda. Before the tournament begins, the team will undergo a vital period of preparation, including a warm-up match scheduled against North African powerhouse Egypt on Tuesday. The mental fortitude and unity within key positional groups, such as the goalkeepers, will be essential if Nigeria hopes to navigate a challenging group and progress deep into the competition in Morocco.
