BREAKING: Rivers Governor Fubara Defects to APC
Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Dependable NG reports that Fubara announced his decision during a stakeholders meeting held at the Government House in Port Harcourt on Tuesday. The development comes amidst intense political tension and speculation in the oil-rich Niger Delta state.
Explaining the rationale behind his abrupt switch, Fubara stated that the move was necessary to fully align his administration with the central government.
“We can’t support President [Tinubu] if we don’t fully identify with him, not just backyard support. Our decision this evening is that we are moving to the APC,” Fubara said as he announced his defection. He also credited President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for providing the “protection” that allowed him to remain in office during the recent political crises.
The announcement came less than twenty-four hours after President Tinubu held confidential discussions with the Governor at the State House in Abuja on Monday. This high-level engagement occurred against the backdrop of escalating political friction in Rivers State and ongoing uncertainties regarding Fubara’s standing within the PDP.
Fubara’s defection follows a previous mass exit by 17 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, loyal to the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, who also joined the APC in a move that significantly altered the balance of power in the legislature.
